Majorelle Blue

Majorelle Blue is an intense and vibrant cobalt blue shade named after the French painter Jacques Majorelle. This artist, fascinated by the light and colors of Morocco, settled in Marrakech in 1919. There, in 1922, he acquired a property where he created a lush botanical garden around his Art Deco villa. In 1937, Majorelle decided to paint his studio and various garden structures a bright ultramarine blue, inspired by the colors he had observed on his travels in Africa. This distinctive hue, which contrasted with the vegetation and other elements of the garden, became his personal trademark and came to be known as “Majorelle Blue.”

The garden, known as Jardin Majorelle, became a living work of art, combining architecture and nature in perfect harmony. After years of neglect following Majorelle's death in 1962, designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé acquired the property in 1980, restoring it and preserving his legacy. Today, the Majorelle Garden is one of the most visited attractions in Marrakech, offering visitors a unique sensory experience where the intense blue remains the protagonist.

The influence of Majorelle Blue has transcended the realm of painting and architecture, inspiring fashion designers and artists around the world. Its intensity and luminosity evoke the depth of the sky and the sea, making it a symbol of creativity and exoticism. In the context of the Riyad collection, this blue is incorporated to capture the vibrant essence and cultural richness of Marrakech, reflecting the fusion of tradition and modernity that characterizes the Surkana woman.
